spicules

Spike-like structures in the Sun's chromosphere that may be observed at or near the limb. They change rapidly, having a lifetime of five to ten minutes. Typically, spicules are 1,000 kilometres across and 10,000 kilometres long. They are not distributed uniformly on the Sun but concentrated along the cell boundaries of the supergranulation pattern.
